National Black Cat Appreciation Day
Kitty-Wan Kenobi, Bookstore Cat
Today is National Black Cat Appreciation Day (not to be confused with National Black Cat Day, on October 27th). Since our proprietor is, in fact, a black cat, this is as good a time as any to remind you that cats are the best thing in the world (next to books) and we are lucky to have them.

All Black Cats are Not Alike by Amy Goldwasser, Peter Arkle
" This pitch-perfect illustrated book proves this simple fact by diving whiskers first into the unique personality, charisma, and character of 50 real all-black cats. From Alfie, who 'has no tolerance for wet humans or being ignored,' to Sashi, who 'enjoys freeze-dried chicken by candlelight and full-on body rubs,' each cat comes to life through a lovingly hand-drawn portrait and quick-witted profile. Delightfully quirky and utterly charming, this motley crew of black cats will win over anyone with a dry sense of humor."
A Novel Way to Die (Black Cat Bookshop series) by Ali Brandon
"Darla Pettistone may have inherited her great aunt Dee’s Brooklyn bookstore, but it’s the store’s mascot - an oversized black cat named Hamlet - who acts like he owns the place. And when someone turns up dead, Hamlet smells something rotten in Brooklyn… As the owner of Pettistone’s Fine Books, Darla is settling nicely into her new life, even reaching an uneasy truce with Hamlet. Unfortunately, when she needs to hire a new clerk, the finicky feline decides to lend a paw to the hiring process. He chases away applicants who don’t meet his approval, finally settling on an unlikely candidate: Robert, a book-loving Goth kid who has a secret only Hamlet knows. And Hamlet can’t seem to stay out of trouble. One of the bookstore’s regular customers, a man who is renovating a local brownstone, claims he’s seen Hamlet prowling the neighborhood. When the man’s business partner is found dead, Darla discovers that Hamlet may have been the only witness to what could be murder. With the crafty cat’s help, she wonders if they just might be able to pounce on a killer..."
The Cat Who Could Read Backwards by Lilian Jackson Braun
"The world of modern art is a mystery to many. But for Jim Qwilleran, it turns into a mystery of another sort when his assignment for The Daily Fluxion leads down the path to murder. A stabbing in an art gallery, vandalized paintings, a fatal fall from a scaffolding - this is not at all what Qwilleran expects when he turns his reporter talents to art. But Qwilleran and his newly found partner, Koko the brilliant Siamese cat, are in their element—sniffing out clues and confounding criminals intent on mayhem and murder."
Cat in a Midnight Choir (Midnight Louie series) by Carole Nelson Douglas
"This time our feisty black cat detective is hunting a mysterious and possibly murderous organization of renegade magicians called the Synth, which has been making Las Vegas too hot to hold for some of Louie's human friends, particularly ex-magician Max Kinsella. Louie's on the case . . . but the trick may be on him this time. And just to make things interesting, while Louie and his furred cohorts battle black magic, both human and not-so-human, Louie's cherished roommate, plucky PR freelancer Temple Barr, is investigating the murderous side of the Synth despite the intense discouragement of female homicide lieutenant C. R. Molina. Molina herself is secretly moonlighting as an undercover operative to nail the killer of a sad, young stripper, and the search has boiled down to two suspects: Temple's current significant other, Max Kinsella, and Molina's long-gone ex-lover, Raf Nadir. Unfortunately, proving either man guilty will seriously impact the lives of Molina and her daughter, Mariah. As Louie and his human friends sink deeper into a lose-lose situation of crime and punishment, there doesn't seem to be any way out of this escalating crisis, except another murder."
My Alphabet by Carole Stevens Bibisi (Local Author)
"In her second book, Miss Bronte stars in her own colorful Alphabet which uses rhyming sentences to highlight each letter on its own page. Bronte's facial expressions and her troop of mice and ladybug friends will make you smile and cheer, and you'll eagerly reach for the next page to catch more of their adventurous antics.
