Top Science-Fiction and Fantasy Novels: Reprise

In 2011, NPR ran a massive book survey to determine the most loved books in the sci-fi and fantasy genre. 60,000 readers voted in the finals, ranking their favorite 100 novels. Personally, I love this kind of reading list; I find it to be much more useful than a list curated solely by critics (who may have other motives than simple enjoyment of a book). As a bookseller, I want to know what people LOVE to read, not just what books are in style.

Ten years later, they revisited the topic and focused on newer titles (especially those released after the last list was made). The update only had 16,000 votes so it's not quite as exhaustive as the original. Personally, I think they missed a couple of really big ones (namely The Witcher series and Altered Carbon) but it still turned up some great reccomendations.

This time around, instead of ranking the books, they divided the list into moods, which has become a popular way to look for book reccomendations lately. For this article, I rearranged the order and put the feel-good books right up front. I think we need those most of all right now.
